In 2015, the new building manager of the Harvard University Science Center had ambitious plans to cut energy costs in a project that involved fitting out a space for the building operations office and upgrading a classroom along with other offices. The building requirements included a new chilled beam system, a new air handler, demand-controlled ventilation capabilities, and integration with the campus-wide BMS. Since other spaces on the campus had been renovated successfully with Swegon diffusers, Harvard called on Swegon again in April 2015 to provide a chilled beam solution for a renovated math classroom, professors’ offices, and the building manager’s office suite for the Harvard University Science Center. With an expected delivery date of September 2015, Swegon had to take on the challenge of delivering the solution within a short timeframe.
For achieving the highest level of comfort with energy savings, Swegon’s VAV chilled beam technology was the perfect match for the Harvard Science Center renovation project. VAV (variable air volume) systems force heated or cooled air into rooms through ductwork that is often overhead. Swegon provided units for the renovated math classroom, professors’ offices, and the building manager’s office suite in the building. The Parasol VAV units reduced energy consumption in these areas in two ways: first, by utilizing its unoccupied mode to deliver minimum required flow when rooms are unoccupied, and second, by matching load to ventilation.
In addition to the DCV benefits, Parasol VAV also provided extra comfort by four-way blow, and the ability of the ADC vanes to individually adjust airflow patterns in each location to eliminate drafts. The on-board damper controls nozzle use to ensure induction at all turndown ratios and to prevent dumping of air even at minimum airflow rate. Swegon and sales representative DAC worked extensively with the engineering firm RFS and the Siemens branch office throughout the project to achieve the desired sequence of operations. This collaboration ensured seamless integration with the campus-wide BMS.
Swegon successfully delivered the solution on time and addressed a single instance of draft quickly by adjusting the ADC vanes in the identified area during a routine follow-up. Not only has the energy expense been reduced, but the rooms served by the Parasol VAV chilled beams are also comfortable, quiet and draft-free.
