FRB is a passive chilled beam for comfort cooling especially designed for visible/suspended installation in the room.
It has a high cooling capacity, even when there is a large difference in temperature between the coolant supply and the return temperature. The FRB is a  small, compact unit available in two widths.
Key Features

FRB 430 – 262 BTUH/ft |
Lengths | From 75 to 154 in. |
Widths | 11 and 17 in |
Heights | 5 in. |
Basic Operation
- FRB is a very compact passive chilled beam. The low build-in height, choice of two widths, plus the fact that water is used as an energy transfer medium, means that the system requires a minimum of space.
- The high performance of this chilled beam means that it maintains high cooling capacity even at low ∆T, which makes it possible to increase the temperature difference between the flow and return. This gives the product good operating properties and high output efficiency.
- FRB is specially designed for suspended installation. The softened form of the beam means that it blends into the room environments in a natural way.
- FRB particularly suitable for areas where heating and ventilation have already been installed, and require supplementary cooling.
- The system has no moving parts which will generate no noise and no maintenance is required.
- Water connections and valves are easily covered by a neat connection cover. The cover is mounted after the beam is hanged and connected.
- Cooling only function

Cooling only: A =chilled air; B=warm room air
Certification

The Swegon FRB passive chilled beam is Eurovent certified, which is your guarantee that all specified data has been confirmed by tests and has been validated. This includes data provided in Swegon’s selection software, ProSelect Web. Click here to learn more about Chilled Beam Certification.
In Addition, the FRB passive beams are certified by Intertek to UL 1995- Heating and Cooling equipment and CAN/CSA C22.2.
Applications

FRB Passive Chilled Beam
The FRB passive chilled beam is designed to be exposed in the space. The casing is finished and can be supplied in a range of standard colors. The FRB is well-suited for use in all types of rooms with waterborne climate cooling;
- Offices (Cellular and open)
- Hotels
- Classrooms
- Conference rooms
- Computer rooms
- Restaurants
- Banks
- Shops
The FRB is a passive chilled beam so there are no air connections. Passive chilled beams can only be used for cooling. If the beams are used for heating, the warm air will build up on the ceiling and there would be no air movement within the space. The water connections are 2 pipe only with 1/2 inch push on NPT fittings. The beam is suspended, pendant style below the ceiling. A spacing of 4 inches (100mm) is recommended to optimize capacity.

Cooling
The cooling capacities have been measured in conformance with EN 1516 Standard. Detailed performance data are available in ProSelect with the following:
- The length of the climate beam (inches)
- The primary airflow (CFM)
- The noise level for an open damper, with ADC
- Nozzle pressure (inWG)
- Airborne cooling capacity (BTUH)
- Waterborne cooling Capacity (BTUH)
The total sensible cooling capacity is the sum of the airborne and waterborne cooling capacities.
Recommended limit values – water | |
Max. recommended coil operating pressure | 230 PSI |
Max. Recommended test pressure for testing a complete installation | 350 PSI |
Recommended min. cooling water flow: | 0.48 GPM |
Increase in temperature, cooling water: | 3.6 – 9 F |
Min. primary air temperature: | Should always be sized to avoid any condensation |
Recommended limit values ensures that any air in the system can be expelled at the minimum water flow rate per circuit.
Installation Details

FRB Installation
FRB is designed for suspended installation. The distance below the ceiling should be 4 inches (100 mm) for best capacity. As an option, the FRB can be supplied without the casing and fitted in ceiling plenum if there is open grid in the suspended ceiling.

In some applications, the FRB chilled beam can be supplied without the finished casing for an industrial look. It is often installed above an open ceiling grate to allow the cooled air to enter the space.

FRB Installation In Open Grid Ceiling
The FRB chilled beam can also come with an extended finished connection cover to cover the water connections providing a clean look the with water connections hidden from view. The connection cover finish will match the chilled beams.
